Government PCs hacked by Botnet - 22/04/2009

  • For the second time this year PCs inside government departments have been hacked to create part of a Botnet. A Botnet is a giant network of remotely-controlled PCs. More than 70 different national government departments around the world were affected.

  • Security experts Finjan have traced this attack to a gang of cyber criminals based in Ukraine. They were found to be selling access to the infected PCs on a hackers’ forum in Russia. These PCs would probably then have been used to knock out networks or websites. Many of the infected machines will have been caught by routine security policies onsite but by no means all.

  • The Metropolitan Police are now investigating the cyber criminals, who at this time have not been caught.
